What is Montessori?

The Montessori method of education was developed by Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952), an Italian who at the age of 26 was the first woman to graduate from the University of Medicine in Rome.

In 1907 she began working with children and after two years of intensive study and development produced her first ground-breaking book, "The Montessori Method".

Educationalist and thinkers around the world quickly recognised it was a watershed. Her ideas continued to be developed and she studied children in many countries. Her study and writing was discussed and put into action throughout Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australia.

The Montessori approach aims to allow each child to experience the joy of learning in a non-competitive, co-operative and nurturing environment in which intellectual and social development go hand in hand. The focus of Montessori education is to help each child reach their full potential in all areas of life. Children are encouraged to grow naturally at their own pace and develop their own unique personality.
